Background

In January 1994 a group of individuals met under the auspices of Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) to discuss issues, develop strategies and initiate programs to promote the concept of entrepreneurs with disabilities.

On October 6, 1995 a forum for Entrepreneurs with Disabilities took place Halifax, Nova Scotia, where The Network for Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Nova Scotia (NEWD NS) was initiated. NEWD NS was committed to raising the profile of Entrepreneurs with Disabilities, expanding the network, advocating on behalf of its members and establishing the types of services and programs deemed important to the members of the organization.

In 1997, the Initiative for Developing Entrepreneurial Activity for persons with disabilities in Nova Scotia (IDEA NS) was launched as a pilot project delivered by NEWD to promote and facilitate entrepreneurship for persons with disabilities.

In 2004 NEWD became the Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Network (EDN). Along with the name change came a new vision, moving EDN into the future with a more dynamic, professional, and recognizable public image. EDN is committed to providing inspiration, support and networking opportunities to help entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs with disabilities in Nova Scotia turn dreams of owning a business into a reality.
